How to Accept UPI Payments on a Website

A website can accept UPI payments through a supported payment gateway or an approved merchant integration. For an automated checkout, the website should not treat a screenshot or a customer message as proof of payment. It should verify the transaction using the provider's trusted server-side confirmation mechanism.

Quick answer

A website can accept UPI payments through a supported payment gateway or an approved merchant integration. For an automated checkout, the website should not treat a screenshot or a customer message as proof of payment. It should verify the transaction using the provider's trusted server-side confirmation mechanism.

Option 1: UPI QR code or payment link

A static QR code or payment link can be simple for manual collection, but the business may need to reconcile payments against orders itself. A static QR is not the same as a fully automated checkout with verified order status.

Option 2: Payment gateway checkout

A payment gateway can provide supported UPI payment methods within a hosted checkout or integration. The merchant generally applies for an account, completes the provider's verification process and configures the website using credentials and approved integration instructions.

How an automated payment flow works

The website creates an order on its server and requests a payment session or order from the gateway. The customer completes payment through the supported checkout. The gateway sends a server-to-server webhook or provides a status API. The website verifies the signature or authenticates the status request, checks the order ID, amount and currency, and only then marks the order paid.

Why webhooks matter

A customer can close the browser before the success page loads, or return to a page without a successful payment. A verified webhook lets the backend receive payment events independently of the browser. Handle duplicate events safely and make status updates idempotent so the same event cannot fulfil an order twice.

Security and testing checklist

Never expose secret keys in frontend code. Verify webhook signatures on the server, use HTTPS, validate amount and order references, store gateway event IDs, log status changes and test success, failure, pending, refund and duplicate-event scenarios. Do not rely on screenshots, query parameters or client-side messages as proof.

Costs and provider approval

Payment providers may charge transaction fees and may have onboarding, settlement, refund or other terms. Fees and supported payment methods can change, so check the provider's current merchant documentation and agreement. A gateway account is subject to provider approval.

Choosing an integration

Compare supported UPI methods, settlement timing, transaction fees, refund support, documentation, webhook reliability, plugins and customer support. For a simple site, a hosted checkout can reduce integration effort; a custom checkout needs more careful development and testing.

Frequently asked questions

Can I accept UPI directly without a payment gateway?

You may collect payments using QR codes or payment links, depending on your bank and merchant setup, but automated order verification usually needs a supported provider integration or bank-approved API.

Is a payment screenshot enough to confirm an order?

No. Verify payment status through the payment provider or bank's trusted server-side mechanism.

Are payment gateway webhooks free?

Webhook delivery is generally part of the gateway integration, but provider pricing and account terms vary. Check the current provider agreement.
